Blast from the Past: The Woodie

Restored. Retro. And Sometimes Radical. Otherwise known as a Woodie. The Woodie is an automobile, most often a station wagon, which originated from the 1930’s and is made mostly out of wood. Collectors with an appreciation for these cars buy them and repair them to resemble their original condition. Larry Chappell, Vice president of the south eastern woodies club, says the purpose of their club is to promote woodies and share them with the public.

Chappell says their club members are Woodie owners from 5 different states and they try to get together as much as possible. He adds, that he’s very protective of his Woodie, only using it as a weekend cruiser. It took him five years to finish his current Woodie, and he’s about to start on a second. The Woodie is also used in pop culture, they were lyrically featured in several songs by the Beach Boys. If you’d like to get up close and personal with one of these cars, make sure to head-on over to the Kings Mountain Beach Blast, tomorrow at the Patriots Park.
