SPD gets public assessment
The Shelby Police Department had their audit Monday in a public hearing at the council chambers.
Residents of Shelby had a chance to attend or call up to speak their minds about the city’s police.
“It went very well. The purpose of the public hearing is to give the citizens and employees of the police department and the city a chance to speak and bring any issues before the commission,” says Mark Scott, assessor for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
Scott says he received numerous phone calls to the line provided, with the majority of feedback and comments very positive about the local police department. The commission assesses the department and their standards and talks to citizens for their opinions about the department. The process includes 464 different standards, including how the department handles money and crime in the police department.
“The hearing was good. I think it basically hit all the points I terms of how our police department is integrating itself through out the community, its professionalism and the various programs that they’ve implemented over the past several years in the community reducing crime,” says Mayor Ted Alexander.
They are still in the assessment phase, and a report will be made available to the chief and his staff this morning but ultimately the commission will decide of Shelby Police retains accreditation. The commission last visited Shelby three years ago.
